Steven Bradbury wins gold
So, I am sitting at my desk on Monday night when my husband comes home with some stamps he found in his office.
DT’s childhood stamp collecting habit peaked in 2000 around the Sydney Olympics and we have a significant number of first day covers and sheets of perfect stamps in mint condition featuring Australian medal winning athletes. We also have a few guest appearances from the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
In our house they fall into the ‘look don’t touch’ category and are kept a safe distance from my glue and scissors. They are besties with my father’s stamp collection, which is also kept out of harms way!
Any way I digress, Monday night’s show and tell was a packet of Steven Bradbury stamps in perfect nick. With the recent Winter Olympics in Sochi Steven has been on the dinner table conversation list as an example of ‘never give up because you might surprise yourself’.
So yesterday I watched his gold medal winning performance again on YouTube again. As I was watching it I was struck by how he fell further and further behind as the race progressed and then of course as the last man standing cruised across the finish line, first, in sheer disbelief.

There were those that decried his win as not worthy of a gold medal. Did he win it in an orthodox manner? No, but win he did and that moment will be his forever.
When have you looked around in disbelief and thought to yourself ‘how did that happen’? It is those moments that remind us that no matter how much we try we are not control. Life will surprise us and it is when we step forward that they joy comes.
I am not saying it’s easy and I had a complete speed wobble this week as I tried to stay upright and find my balance in what felt like a day of complete overwhelm. Steven Bradbury stayed completely focused on finishing the race as best as he could and the only action he needed to take was to put one skate in front of the other.
So on the way to your gold medal remember what the goal is, look at the chaos around you and work out how it is helping you get to where you want to go. Sometimes all we need to do is reframe where we are to put a spring back in our step.
This post is two days late, it rambles a bit and makes it point in a less than perfect manner but you know what, it is moving me forward in building a conversation within The Collective and that is what really matters.
Do what matters to you today my lovelies.
